Abstract (Résumé français en bas) The system of the Five Cycles and the Six Qi is one of the major cosmological theories of the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The Seven Grand Chapters, incorporated under Tang in the book Suwen of the TCM Bible Huangdi neijing, constitute the original building blocks of this system. By examining the rhymes and taboo characters of the text, the author tries to resolve the millennium-old riddle of their dating and is able to conclude that they were formed during the Dynasties of the South and the North, around the beginning of the 6th century. Then, by analyzing the structure of the system presented in the corpus, the author shows that this system has been superimposed on that of yinyang and five agents, and that these two systems would together guide henceforth medical practice. The third part of this study consists of the author’s annotated translation into French of the Seven Grand Chapters that make up one third of the Suwen. Read more
